The NRL also known as the National Rugby League is the top flight rugby league competition in the Southern Hemisphere. The following teams make up the NRL competition table: Brisbane Broncos, Canberra Raiders, Canterbury Bulldogs, Cronulla Sharks, Gold Coast Titans, Manly Sea Eagles, Melbourne Storm, Newcastle Knights, New Zealand Warriors, North Queensland Cowboys, Parramatta Eels, Penrith Panthers, South Sydney Rabbitohs, St. George Illawarra Dragons, Sydney Roosters and the Wests Tigers. For the most part of the last century rugby league in Australia saw the game split down state lines. Queensland and New South Wales had their own separate Boards and first grade rugby league competitions. The NSWRL which had the premier competition began expanding the Sydney centric competition nationally in the 1980's.

This all changed in 1995 when the Australian Rugby League took over the running of the national competition with plans to further expand the game nationally. This was short lived as the Super League war broke out throwing the game of rugby league into turmoil.

In 1997 two top flight rugby league competitions (ARL and Super League) were run concurrently in Australia. After nearly bringing the game of rugby league to its knees a peace deal was brokered between the waring parties and the NRL was formed. In 1998 the NRL took over the running of the top flight rugby league competition.

In an attempt to align all forms of the game nationally the Australian Rugby League Commission took over the running of all forms of rugby league including the NRL in 2012.

The NRL competition has 16 teams. At present there are fifteen teams from Australia and one team from New Zealand.
