Brough to lead Scotland Bravehearts once more

In a major boost, Scotland will again be captained by Danny Brough for their defence of the European Championship this autumn, after the Huddersfield Giants star - voted into Super League’s Dream Team this week as the best stand-off in the competition – turned down the option of having a full off-season.

Scotland out to defend European Championship Crown

For the first time in over 10 years as Scotland head coach, Steve McCormack is spoilt for choice this year as he selects his squad to defend their European Championship crown next month. There have never been so many Scotland international players in the professional game with almost 50 capped at full, ‘A’, Student or U19 level playing in England’s three professional divisions or in Australia’s NRL.

Add to that are another half dozen or so full-time professionals who are eligible for Scotland who have been in contact with the management team this season to show their eagerness to represent their family’s roots.

Scotland is punching above its weight on the international stage despite struggling in the amateur ranks. John Davidson reports.

One of the surprise packets of the 2013 World Cup, along with the USA, was the performance of Scotland. The Bravehearts beat both Tonga and the Tomahawks and went through the group stage undefeated after a 30-30 draw with Italy. Reaching a quarter-final was unexpected and although Scotland was well beaten by New Zealand 40-4, they were not embarrassed by one of international footy’s heavyweights.

Scotland Rugby League get the Triple, European Champions, 2016 4 Nations and Brough player of the tournament

Scotland skipper Danny Brough was presented the Player of the Tournament trophy by league legend Malcolm Reilly this afternoon, as the Bravehearts formally collected the European Championship trophy at Red Hall, Leeds.

Brough led his country to their first-ever silverware 20 years after the formation of Scotland Rugby League, which also marked coach Steve McCormack’s 10 years at the helm in fine style, the pair lifting the European Championship together.
