Sierra Leone granted obersver status while USARL recognised by RLEF

At its board meeting following the successful conclusion of the European Championship, the RLEF has granted Observer status to a third West African country, Sierra Leone – who follow in the footsteps of Ghana and Nigeria – and admitted the United States Association of Rugby League as an Affiliate Member.

Rugby League development officer in Sierra Leone, Magnus Campbell, is convinced that the sport can take off in the country.
Already, and in concert with Wales Rugby League, there have been sessions in schools and a growing interest at club level, and there is a real desire in the country to learn and improve.

As part of a funded mentoring partnership, he spent a second, ten day stint promoting and coaching the sport in the country.

Rugby league’s Commonwealth expansion initiative has entered new territory following an exploratory visit to Sierra Leone by a joint Wales Rugby League-Rugby League European Federation delegation. WRL’s National Development Manager Mark Jones and RLEF General Manager Danny Kazandjian have just returned from a week in the West African country to investigate opportunities for the sport to make a lasting impression there.
