After a week’s delay caused by heavy snow, the new domestic season in Serbia kicks off today, the 17th campaign of the First Division since the renewal of the sport.
The Serbian Rugby League Federation is to further enhance its links with the English regions by signing a three-year deal with the Yorkshire Men’s League, as part of the Rugby Football League’s Lionhearts programme.
Serbian Rugby League has announced that a sponsorship deal with the Australian embassy in Serbia will continue in 2018. Through the Australian Department for Foreign Affairs’ Trade Direct Aid Programme, the SRL will again receive funds for rugby league development at junior and youth level.
The honours have been shared as the Serbian rugby league season comes to an end, after Partizan held on to defeat rivals Red Star 32-26 to win the inaugural, regional Balkan Super League title, at the FK BASK Arena in the capital city, in the second ‘battle of Belgrade.’
Four Serbian sides will contest the semi-finals of the inaugural Balkan Super League on 4 November. Eight teams entered; five from Serbia, Bulgarians Lokomotiva Sofia, Kadikoy Bulls the champions of Turkey and Bosnian side Vitez - in the first international club comopetition of its kind in the region.
