NZ Rugby League make changes to the National Schools tournament

Auckland, New Zealand, May 29, 2013 – Strong growth in rugby league at secondary school level has seen the NZRL introduce selection criteria for this year’s NZRL National Secondary Schools Tournament. Previously the tournament had an open invitation, but this year places will first be offered to the best performing schools in each of the NZRL’s seven zones. That should see a real spread of the country’s talent on show from September 2-6 at Bruce Pulman Park in Papakura.

Simon Mannering replaces Benji Marshall as New Zealand’s rugby league captain

Current New Zealand Warrior's skipper Simon Mannering has been named as the new captain of the Kiwis. Mannering will have plenty of pressure on his shoulders as New Zealand look to defend their World Cup title later this year when the Rugby League World Cup kicks off in the UK.

New Zealand have named a 19 man squad for their clash against Australia in Townsville on the 13th of October.  Sam Kasiano and Dean Whare will join the Kiwi squad for the first time.

Due to the departure of a Development Officer a position has come available in the Mid to Far North. Rugby League Northland in partnership with KiwiSport is looking to employ another Rugby League Development officer.

Three players Josh Papalii, Jason Taumalolo, Antonio Winterstein, have been added to the train-on squad.

The final qualifiers for the 2008 Rugby League World Cup finished up in November. Australia, New Zealand, England, France and Papua New Guinea automatically qualified. The remaining five spots have seen 14 teams compete in the qualifying rounds over the last 2 years. The end result will see arguably the best 10 rugby league nations in the World battle it out in next years World Cup.
