Ethiopia play first official rugby league match

The newly-formed Ethiopia rugby league has taken further positive steps following the completion of a visit by RLEF Middle East Africa Regional Director Remond Safi.
He was based in the sport’s new stronghold, the city of Mekelle in the State of Tigray, where an excited crowd watched the first match officially played.

Following three years of development work in the state of Tigray, Ethiopia has been awarded official observer status by the RLEF, becoming the sixth African nation to be recognised.
Centred around the Nicholas Robinson School in Mekelle, the sport is regularly taught to 1,300 children, aged between 7 and 17-years-old.
