NRL ASIA & ASEAN Rugby League Associations first non-international nines flagship The Southern Dragon Boats will be launched March 3rd 2018 at the Wombat 9’s tournament to be hosted in Sydney by partner club the Coogee Randwick Wombats.
The Dragon Boats will mark what will be the first of several teams established to represent Asian and other multicultural heritage players as well as their supporters in the exciting and popular nines format both in Australia and abroad.
Dragon Boats management also pledge to extend their on field commitments into NRL ASIA’s schools and universities development aims program.
The Dragon Boats concept was developed by twin brothers Daniel and Damien Nicholls of Thailand heritage who wanted to create a multicultural team striving for on field success, but more importantly the off field success – reaching out to the communities within Asia to continue to promote and develop the game of Rugby League.
“Damien and Daniel have both done a wonderful job in creating the Dragon Boats team. Both of the boys have represented their Thailand heritage at international level so they have a good understanding of the game of Rugby League. We are proud to be supporting their concept as they continue to promote and develop the game throughout ASIA.” says Peter Thompson, Vice Chairman at NRL ASIA.
The Southern Dragon Boats are embarked to participate in several 9’s events inside the coming calendar year including the “Alfie Langer” Thai Nines Pattaya City in September.
