Hundreds of students and teachers at Oracabessa High, St Mary watched rugby league for the first time, as the school hosted the JRLA/Beast Sporting Goods U16 tournament which saw the JRLA fulfil a commitment to play the sport outside of its traditional Kingston areas, St. Andrew and St. Catherine.
Kingston College, Spanish Town High, St. Catherine High, Bog Walk High, Campion College, Edith Dalton James High and the hosts competed, with Spanish Town High claiming ultimate victory, 8-4, over St. Catherine High. The Oracabessa team did not disappoint their new-found fans, making the semi-finals.
The JRLA is targeting additional schools in St. Mary, with scholarship opportunities at intercollegiate level available. In addition, they are working towards the formation of a community club being established in the Oracabessa area in the coming months.
The 2014-2015 high school season runs from September to April involving 10 schools, with Bog Walk High and The Cedar Grove Academy the latest to join. The season will close on 24 April with the JRLA U14 National 9-a-side tournament
