2013 World Cup Snapshot – Just prior to the 2008 Rugby League World Cup the RFL (Rugby Football League) confirmed that England had drawn up plans to host the 2013 World Cup. On the back of the success of the 2008 World Cup the ARL (Australian Rugby League) also intended to bid to host the tournament again. After much speculation on the 28th of July 2009 Richard Lewis announced that Great Britain would be hosting the tournament.

The 2013 Rugby League World Cup will be the 14th instalment of the oldest rugby World Cup tournament on the planet. Most games will be played in England with Wales, Ireland and France to host games. The 2013 World Cup will build on the success of the 2008 World Cup. On the 23rd of February 2010 after a meeting by the Rugby League International Federation (RLIF) in Singapore, it was announced to everyone’s surprise that the number of participating nations would increase from 10 to 14 for the 2013 Rugby League World Cup. The other major change announced by the RLIF on the 23rd of February is that 12 nations would automatically qualify with the remaining two places contested in World Cup qualifying games.

On the 30th of November 2010 (exactly 3 years out from the 2013 World Cup final) the RLIF /RFL launched the World Cup and released the group format along with details of nations who had automatically qualified and nations who would have to play qualifiers. The format being a little more complex then previous World Cup’s was to provide competitive games like the 2008 World Cup and bring back quarter finals which was last played in the 2000 World Cup. The organisers have also taken the super pool concept and modified it so that the top 3 teams in Group A and Group B go through to the quarter finals with only the top team in Group C and Group D making it through. Just to make the format a little more complex teams in group C and D will play everyone in their group and also play another game against a team in the opposing group (Scotland v Atlantic qualifier, Tonga v Cook Islands, Wales v European qualifier).

The World Cup qualifiers started in 2011 with nations being broken up into two qualifying groups (Atlantic Qualifiers and European Qualifiers). United States (Atlantic Qualifier) and Italy (European Qualifier) both made history by qualifying for their first ever Rugby League World Cup.

Richard Lewis from the RFL has indicated that the 2013 Rugby League World Cup will see a majority of games played in rugby league heartlands in the North of England. On the 28th November 2011 the RFL anounced the venues for the group stages and quarter-finals. The following venues will host games during the 2013 Rugby League World Cup. Avignon -The Parc des Sports Stadium, Bristol – The Memorial Ground, Calderdale – The Shay Stadium Halifax, Copeland – Pow Beck Stadium Whitehaven, Hull – KC Stadium, Hull – Craven Park, Kirklees -The Galpharm Stadium, Leeds – Headingley Carnegie Stadium, Limerick – Thomond Park, Perpignan – The Stade Gilbert Brutus, Neath – The Gnoll, Rochdale – Spotland Stadium, Salford – City of Salford Stadium, St Helens – Langtree Park Stadium, Warrington -The Halliwell Jones Stadium, Wigan -The Leigh Sports Village, Wigan – DW Stadium, Wrexham -The Glyndwr University Racecourse Stadium.

On the 22nd of March 2012 the RFL released the schedule for the pool matches which will see the opening ceremony and double header played at Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales. (Please scroll down the page to see the schedule of fixures)
