WHO would ever have thought they’d live to see the day when an Argentinian sauce company sponsored an international rugby league competition?
And what’s more – sponsoring a tournament contested by Latin American teams from previously unchartered rugby league territory?
Today gourmet sauce specialist Chimi has announced it will be event sponsor for Saturday’s (May 31) Copa de Rugby XIII event at Norford Park, Sefton in Sydney.
The Chimi Copa de Rugby XIII will be the first all-Latino rugby league affair, with eight teams representing nations from Mexico to Chile to Brazil and, naturally, Argentina (draw attached).
They will help inject a new flavour to the game, with team nicknames such as the Sun Gods, Incas, Gauchos and Piratas (pirates).
“We had been looking to support a sporting event that had a Latino connection, but which also emphasised people trying something new,” Chimi.com.au director Maria Navarro said.
“With our own son Daniel being an ardent fan of rugby league, this was a perfect opportunity.
“Just as Copa de Rugby XIII will bring the sport of rugby league to new people, we’re also excited to be putting our authentic chimichurri sauces before a barbecue-loving Australian audience.
“We contend Chimi’s sauces are the best in the world and we defy people to show us otherwise.”
The backing from Chimi.com.au will have direct benefits for Latin Heat Rugby League, currently providing international and development opportunities to previously unrepresented Latin America.
Aside from Saturday’s Copa de Rugby XIII, the Latin Heat will pit its elite squad against Thailand on Sunday, June 1, 1pm at Windsor Sports Complex.
The not-for-profit Latin Heat are also in the process of raising funds via Kickstarter to send 1000 development balls and instructional DVDs to Latin America.
“In 10 short months we’ve grown a lot quicker than expected, which is both pleasing and financially challenging,” Heat director Robert Burgin said.
“Thailand will be our fifth international opponent in a year, we have encouraged start-up clubs in Mexico and Brazil amongst others, grown a large social media fan base, and are incredibly proud of our Kickstarter project.
“But insurance, uniforms, hire fees, travel costs etc all add up and we can’t overstate the importance of a brand with integrity like Chimi throwing their support behind us.”
