The newly established Espana Rugby League will be breaking new ground with the first rugby league match to be played in Castellon province, in the northeast of Spain tonight.

The CASTELLÓN R.C. will take on the VALENCIAN WARRIORS R.L. tonight (Friday the 15th of November) at 7.30pm.

Castellon also known as the “Elephants” will face Valencian Warriors Rugby League from Albal in what will be a historic moment for rugby league in Spain. This match could be the beginning of something big for rugby league in Spain which has had it moments over the years but just hasn’t been able to keep the momentum going.

In June 2009 the Catalans Dragons played the Warrington Wolves in Barcelona in front of over 18,000 fans. The game was hailed a huge success with many of Barcelona locals taking part in the carnival atmosphere.

Rugby League also had a presence in the North of spain in the Catalonia region around the time of the Catalan Dragons visit but the competition only lasted one season. It is hoped this time round with the organisation representing Spain not just Catalonia, that they will have the support of the Rugby League European Federation. RLEF recognition will assist the Espana Rugby League with obtaining the required support to establish a long term competition.

So if you’re from Castellon or just happen to be passing by you cannot miss this historic match. It will be the first for rugby league or “Rugby XIII” as locals call it in this part of the world.
