Papua New Guinea and Hull KR legend Stanley Gene has challenged supporters to pack out MS3 Craven Park for its two Rugby League World Cup 2013 matches, following the announcement of tickets going on sale for the new North Stand.

The ground will host the Kumuls’ clash with France on October 27 and their showdown with southern-hemisphere rivals Samoa on November 4.

And Gene hopes that supporters of Hull’s two famous Rugby League clubs, and fans from further afield, will rally behind his fellow countrymen. He said:

“It’s a fantastic facility that will offer some great views of the action, and I’m sure there’ll be fans of both Hull teams packing into it, and hopefully getting behind PNG.

“In 1995, we played at the Boulevard against Tonga and I remember after that game the supporters saying it was the best game they’d ever seen.

“We passed the ball around like a hot potato, and we played some really attractive rugby. It will be same for the games against France and Samoa and it will be great for the city.

“The PNG people, as well as the French and Samoans, will bring a little bit of their culture with them too, and I’m looking forward to that.”
Gene made his Rugby League World Cup debut in 1995, and his performances earned him a contract in the UK.

He played for Hull KR, Hull FC, Huddersfield, Bradford and Halifax before announcing his retirement in 2010. He now coaches KR’s under-19s team. Gene added:

“The wonderful city of Hull has adopted me and given me everything I dreamed about.

“I’ve lived here for 16 years and the people around here are the friendliest and most passionate about Rugby League that I know.
“I’m not sad not to be playing at RLWC2013 as I am still very excited about it, and I know the people of Hull are too.”
