1977 World Cup Snapshot – The 1977 World Cup returned to the same format as the 1972 World Cup. England and Wales were sacrificed in place of Great Britain again. Australia and New Zealand co-hosted the tournament with a majority of games played in New Zealand. The World Cup Final saw Great Britain and Australia play each other at the Sydney Cricket Ground. In another classic encounter Australia won the final 13 -12. Great Britain were unlucky not to win when they had a certain try called back with the ref blowing a penalty instead of playing advantage.
