South Wales Scorpions have signed 23-year old Irish international Sam Wellings for 2013.
The second row forward played twice for the Scorpions at the end of the 2012 season before making his full international debut in his Ireland’s 30-18 European Cup win over Scotland in October.
Originally with West London Sharks RLFC, Wellings played for three years with the successful Leeds Met University side, captained them for one season and helped them to win two Student Grand Finals in a row in 2011 and 2012.
He was also an Ireland Students and Ireland Wolfhounds international at the time, playing against Wales twice in 2012 at both student and A level. It was his performance in the latter game, where Wales clinched a dramatic 28-26 win, that caught Scorpions’ coach Dave Clark’s eye.
“Sam comes to us with outstanding credentials,†Clark said. “He was with the best university Rugby League side in the country for three years and he has already won a full international cap.
“He spent a lot of 2012 playing international Rugby League for Ireland at various levels so is experienced at the big stage.
“He will have been coached well by Mark Aston and Carl de Chenu and I know he will be hoping to gain a place in Ireland’s World Cup squad, so we’re looking forward to some top quality performances from him in 2013.â€
