History – In early 2009 Denmark were unranked in world rankings but were awarded official observer status by the Rugby League International Federation. Denmark participated in the Scandinavia 9’s held in Oslo, Norway in May 2009. The event was an International tournament and featured teams from Denmark, Sweden, Catalonia, Germany and Norway. After this initial period rugby league dropped off the radar.
All this changed in late 2011 when the newly formed Dansk Rugby League Forbund (DRLF) took over the development of rugby league in Denmark. Having been awarded official observer status by the RLIF the new board focused on the development of the game locally.
In October 2011 the Dansih XIII defeated Norway 28 – 8 to claim the Nordic Cup. 2012 will see Denmark participate in an expanded Nordic Cup competition involving Norway and Sweden.
The development and establishment of rugby league in Denmark is still at the very early stages. It is hoped that with the right support from the rugby league community and the Rugby League European Federation (RLEF), Denmark will be able to achieve RLEF affiliate membership within the next two years.
The DRLF continues to run the game. There are now two clubs in Denmark, which include youth teams in Jutland. Both clubs, Copenhagen RLFC and Jylland RLFC, were founded in 2013. There are hopes for a third club, but not until 2015-6. The clubs will play games in Norway, Sweden and Germany with little influence by borders.
