Greek rugby league association awarded observer status

The RLEF has granted Observer status to the Greek Rugby League Association. The GRLA, which is registered in Athens, was incorporated on 28 February 2017 and is the governing body of the four clubs that participate in the domestic competition; Patras, Rhodes Knights, Aris Eagles and Attica Rhinos.

RLEF suspend Hellenic Federation of Rugby League

Following a year-long investigation, which culminated in an extraordinary general meeting of the RLEF membership, Greek rugby league’s governing body has been suspended indefinitely for wilfully acting in a manner prejudicial to the interests of the RLEF and international rugby league.

Greece withdraw from Malta trip

On 1 October the Hellenic Federation of Rugby League informed the RLEF its national team would not be able to fulfil the away leg of its European Championship C campaign in Malta on 10 October, citing the country’s economic difficulties and the withdrawal of two sponsors.

Greece coach names initial squad for European Championship C Tournament

Greece head coach Matthew Ashill has announced a train-on squad for the October matches against Malta and Spain in European Championship C.

The winners will gain the final place in the 2016 European Qualifiers for the World Cup the following year, alongside Wales, Ireland, Serbia, Russia and Italy.

Greek Rugby League runs coaching activity with 13 receiving Level 1 qualification

The final technical activity of the EU-backed Leadership Devolution Project took place in Athens, with 13 local coaches receiving their Level 1 qualification from RLEF coaching manager Martin Crick.

He also delivered educator-training to three Greek trainees, Tasos Pantazidis, Matt Ashill and Nikos Kostakis.

Lionhearts return from successful rugby league tour to Greece


The England Lionhearts from the Midlands region have returned from a successful two-match tour of Greece facing club sides.

In the first match, four tries from winger Matt Dudley were the highlight as A.E.K. were beaten 64-14 in Athens. Adam Clifford finished with 24 points from two tries and eight goals, James Derry, Mike Florey, Nathan Parker, Jon Doughty, David Beever and Dean Thompson with their other touchdowns. The hosts, who are recently formed, replied before the break with a score from Polymeneas Pavlos, Varypatis Panos and Syti Giorgin with a try and a conversion their other scorers.

Greek Rugby League Championship boosted by increased media interest

The Hellenic Rugby League Championship is drawing to a close and three teams still have a chance of being in the Grand Final.

Pegasus Neos Kosmos and AEK Kokkinias will face each other in two weeks’ time in the standout match remaining, AEK having claimed the spoils in round one. The winners look set to claim a finals berth.
