Top level domestic competition - Russian Championship - 8 teams play in the top league from April to October.

History - Russia first started playing rugby league under the USSR in 1991 with the establishment of the Russian Championship.

In 1995 Russia played in the Emerging Nations World Cup. Russia only managed a win against rivals the United States.

In 2000 Russia played in the Rugby League World Cup for the first time. They were in the same pool as Australia, England and Fiji. Russia did not win a game but showed league was developing well in the country.

Russia played in qualifiers for the 2008 Rugby League World Cup. They finish undefeated in the first round of European qualifiers. In the second round even with the coaching assistance of Tim Sheen's they lost all games and failed to qualify for the 2008 World Cup.

The RLEF have annonced that Russia, Lebanon and Serbia will take part the Euro-Med Challenge in 2008.
